Paternity Testing (DNA) if desired SCOPE OF PRACTICE
I provide care for women through their normal childbearing cycle. I am trained to identify deviations from normal and consult with or refer to a physician when appropriate. In situations where complications arise during labor and delivery, I will accompany you to the hospital as an advocate and support person. I do not have hospital privileges; once in the hospital, the staff and the attending physician take responsibility for your medical care. I am trained in the management of complications if the situation requires immediate action. I bring basic equipment and supplies needed for the management of normal childbirth and common complications such as non reassuring fetal heart tones, neonatal resuscitation and maternal hemorrhage. I will repair most vaginal laceration in the event of a tear.
PRENATAL CARE
Prenatal care includes but not limited to a general physical exam, gynecological exam, assessment of fetal growth and activity, nutritional counseling, standard prenatal care, monitoring blood pressure, test urine for presence of glucose and or protein, weight of mother, lab work, childbirth education, home birth preparation, conservative screening for risk, as well as thorough explanations of each procedure. Limited OB ultrasound is available in the office.
BIRTH ATTENDANCE
Once you are at least 37 weeks, you can stay home and have your baby. Your birth will be attended by a licensed midwife. Please notify me early in your labor to assure my presence at your birth. I will remain with you through out labor, and assist you in the delivery of your baby. My primary tasks are to monitor the mother and baby for any deviations from normal and assist you as needed. I will remain with you for at least two hours after delivery. My birth attendant, Sandy is on call for each birth who is CPR trained in Neonatal Resuscitation.
NEWBORN CARE
I will perform a newborn exam on your baby within the first two hours of birth. The proper eye medication is instilled. Vitamin K given to your baby if indicated. I will offer the PKU test as indicated. I recommend that your baby see a pediatrician or your family physician by two weeks for normal newborn care.
POSTPARTUM VISITS
I will talk with you frequently on the phone as well as you may call me at anytime. I will see you and your baby at one week, three weeks, and six weeks in my office. Additional visits and home visits are available as indicated. At six weeks, I will do a Pap smear on you and check to see that you have healed properly. If you have family planning concerns, I will be happy to discuss these options with you. I will complete and file the birth certificate.
